Portfolio Task 2: Modernist Graphic Design


Through this montage of images, a mixture of type and photos merged together to create the cover artwork. As photo montage became a popular move in the Modernist era, it clearly connotes a change through youth during a time of industrialisation.

This can be arguably one of the best pieces of modernist graphic design. The visual reference to industrialisation by using screws to bind the book together was a unusual idea of that time, which was completely evolving.

Fortunato Depero (1927) Futurista, Link.

This powerful image of a steam train was produced by in 1952 after the war. It connotes a strong sense of pride and power throughout the imagery. This purposely was to regenerate the hopes and aspirations of a country and gives them an idealistic approach to the world.

Herbert Bayer's approach to this particular piece was to create geometrical shapes that connote a story of independence through a communist government. Similar to the much early approaches by Russian graphic design before it was basically destroyed.

This iconic view on Modernity Graphic Design formed from again geometrical shapes, a process that had not been used before to form design. It shows you the reality of early Weimar Germany with a war just around the corner.
